Patagonia Smoked Wild Pink Salmon

Image
Slow Smoked with Brown Sugar & Pastrami Spice The brown sugar flavor tastes okay, and the pastrami spice tastes like pastrami. The brown sugar flavor smells quite salmon-y though not so much that I can't eat it, whereas the pastrami spice masks fishiness quite well. I was initially afraid there would be lots of little bones in the fish from the way it looks but it actually is quite nice. The texture reminds me more of salmon that has been fried in a pan, minus the crisp, than typical smoked salmon. The fish is more flaky and the flavor is not bad. I'm not sure that it would be worth the full price but it is probably worth for campers, backpackers, and others who can't easily go to a grocery to cook their own. I do appreciate that the tin is mostly fish and there is next to no oil to have to dispose of.

Pasta Primavera with Trader Joe's Smoked Salmon

Image
One of my partners offered to make me some actual meals using tinned fish, after I commented that the oil sometimes gives me heartburn. Pasta Primavera with Trader Joe's Smoked Salmon was the first tinned fish dish he made for me. I decided to add an extra tin of the salmon on top of his initial complete recipe. I like it with more fish than he does. No garlic, so nice!

Brunswick Butterflied Sardines in Olive Oil

Image
It has a fishier smell compared to some of the other sardines I've had. Looks not too bad right out of the can. Flavor wise, it is pleasantly salty and familiar. I wouldn't place it as sardines if it was served to me on a plate.  All in all nice to have as part of my lunch. :-) I would eat this again.

Fishwife!!! Anchovies and Albacore in Spicy Olive Oil

Image
So Fishwife has continued to be the most palatable tinned fish, winning in presentation and texture. Except the anchovies. They are so salty. I had taken a picture but it wasn't very nice presentation haha. It's a challenge to photograph tinned fish beautifully. I didn't realize the saltiness of the anchovies would be a problem until after I assembled my open faced cream cheese avocado with anchovies sando, but it was really too much for me. I think these were just fine, probably good for pasta or pizzas but I may just not like anchovies much. I also had the Albacore in Spicy Olive Oil, as a tuna sandwich since texturally the Fishwife tins are not much different than the basic rounds from most other brands like Genova or whatever Costco happens to be selling. It was pretty good, and Fishwife doesn't skimp on the seasonings, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to buy tuna from Fishwife unless there was a sale.

Henry & Lisa's Natural Seafood Wild Alaskan Pink Salmon

Henry & Lisa's Natural Seafood Wild Alaskan Pink Salmon: B- Honestly not the most appetizing to view but texture and flavor was better than the Kirkland Signature Wild Alaskan Pink Salmon. The packaging says that it is cooked with skin and bones to make it richer in Omega-3s, so I had an inkling that the fish would potentially come with bones. The processing of the salmon seems to have made the bones quite delicate, like in sardines despite the larger circumference. I was only able to eat half a can because of how much salmon was packed in there. It wasn't oily, more like it was just tinned with the broth that seeps out of salmon when it is cooked. This tinned fish was still a step down from Trader Joes and Fishwife rectangular tins -- which both are filleted which means no bones. In this case, I just used chopsticks to pick the bones out as they were just firm enough to still be removable. No photo since it genuinely did not look appetizing. But I saved the leftover salmo...

Fishwife Sardines with Preserved Lemon

Image
Fishwife Sardines with Preserved Lemon: A I had this with some plant based cream cheese and low carb high protein bread. It was quite nice. A very different experience from Nuri Sardines which had an intact and slightly crunchy spine that I could easily pick out. I had to double check that there were bones on the fish because the bites were just so tender and moist. These were the least bony bone-in sardines I have had in my life. I have had quite a few different sardines at this point. This, Nuri, and Seasons competing for number one, tho considering price point and availability at the moment, Seasons is the daily driver. Texture-wise Fishwife Sardines is the winner, though Nuri wins hands down on scent and flavor.

Beach Cliff Fish Steaks

Beach Cliff Fish Steaks in Mustard Sauce: C- I would rather eat basic Chicken of the Sea Tuna. The texture was kind of tough and dry... Also I discovered through this particular tin that I don't care for mustard and fish. 😔 I really didn't enjoy this.
